Education

Education does not transform the world.

Education changes people.

People transform the world.

Paulo Freire

The word museum is old, but it doesn’t smell of mould!

Museums are a place for everyone and by everyone. They are special places that pave the way and give wings. They are places for questions and answers, for discovery and construction, for transformation, but also for fun. Learning in a fun way. That’s what it’s all about when we talk about Education in Museums and when we talk about the Soares dos Reis National Museum’s Education Service.

Vision

To be a place where people and the world are valued.

Mission

To provide spaces for mediation that create learning, experiences and memories.

Conservation and restoration action

Rui Pinheiro©MNSR

He also participates in research projects with the aim of contributing to new studies on conservation and restoration techniques and procedures.

Projeto GEO-SR

The GEO-SR project aims to fill a deep gap in scientific and technological knowledge regarding the material, conservative and symbolic components of 19th century European geomaterial sculpture, through the study of 35 sculptures by António Soares dos Reis.

The team is led by the Center for Research in Science and Technology of the Arts at the Catholic University of Portugal and includes researchers from GeoBioTec, a research center at the University of Aveiro, the Physics Center at the University of Minho, Construct, a research unit at the Faculty of of Engineering at the University of Porto and MNSR, which stands out here as an incubator for the applicability of the data collected.

Financing – COMPETE 2020 in its European Regional Development Fund component and by the budget of the Foundation for Science and Technology in its State budget component.

Bento Coelho da Silveira scientific study

The conservation and restoration intervention of the painting and frame was carried out through the patronage of His Highness, Prince Aga Khan, and had as its main objective to restore the material and aesthetic integrity of the set.

It was preceded by a technical-scientific study that involved researchers from the MNSR and three universities (the HERCULES Laboratory, from the University of Évora, the Center for Research in Science and Technology of the Arts at the Catholic University of Portugal and the Department of Condensed Matter Physics, Crystallography and Mineralogy, from the University of Valladolid).

Project MOLAB 2018

MNSR’s participation in the project MOLAB, which consisted of a mostly non-invasive and portable analysis of bronze pieces by António Soares dos Reis (using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, thermography and μ-Raman techniques), allowed to expand the sample group of sculptures under study, also making comparative data are more relevant.

Funding – HERCULES Laboratory, at the University of Évora, complemented by a doctoral thesis funded by the Science and Technology Foundation.
