Education does not transform the world.
Education changes people.
People transform the world.
The word museum is old, but it doesn’t smell of mould!
Museums are a place for everyone and by everyone. They are places for questions and answers, for discovery and construction, for transformation, but also for fun. Learning in a fun way. That’s what it’s all about when we talk about Education in Museums and when we talk about the Soares dos Reis National Museum’s Education Service.
To be a place where people and the world are valued.
To provide spaces for mediation that create learning, experiences and memories.
We believe that the museum of the 21st century is an inclusive and participatory space for all citizens. See the programme in the Catalogue for Families. Consult the program in the Catalog for the Educational Community.

Documentation and Information
The Documentation and Information Service includes the Library and the Soares dos Reis National Museum Archive.
The Library is specialized in Art History, namely in the thematic areas of its collections – Painting, Sculpture, Decorative Arts, Engraving, Drawing, Archaeology –, as well as Museology and the History of Porto. The documentary collection consists of reference works, monographs, periodicals, museum catalogues, exhibition catalogues, auction catalogues, academic theses and also collections of posters, postcards and leaflets.
The Archive, reflecting the museum’s activity and history, is divided into two collections: that of the Soares dos Reis National Museum and that of the Porto Municipal Museum. The Archive’s services include the processing and control of documentation and information, as well as consultation and dissemination.
Conservation and Restoration
The Soares dos Reis National Museum carries out continuous conservation and restoration work, as part of the managing and monitoring of its different collections. It also participates in research projects aiming to develop new conservation and restoration techniques and procedures.
The GEO-SR project aims to fill a deep gap in scientific and technological knowledge regarding the material, conservation and symbolic components of 19th century European geomaterial sculpture by studying 35 sculptures by António Soares dos Reis.
The team is led by the Research Centre for Science and Technology of the Arts at the Catholic University of Portugal and includes researchers from GeoBioTec, a University of Aveiro research centre; the Physics Centre of the University of Minho; Construct, a research unit of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and the MNSR, whose role here is as an incubator for the applicability of the collected data.
Bento Coelho da Silveira Scientific study
The conservation and restoration of the painting and frame was carried out under the patronage of His Highness, Prince Aga Khan, and its main goal was to restore the work’s material and aesthetic integrity.
It was preceded by a technical-scientific study involving researchers from the MNSR and three universities (the HERCULES Laboratory at the University of Évora, the Research Centre for Science and Technology of the Arts at the Catholic University of Portugal and the Department of Condensed Matter Physics, Crystallography and Mineralogy at the University of Valladolid).
MOLAB 2018 Project
The participation of the MNSR in the MOLAB project, which consisted of a mostly non-invasive and portable analysis of bronze pieces by António Soares dos Reis (using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, thermography and μ-Raman techniques), allowed the sample group of sculptures under study to be expanded, making comparative data even more significant.
The lending of spaces in the dependent services and buildings managed by the Directorate-General of Cultural Heritage is legally regulated and provides for the hosting of events of a cultural, social, academic, scientific, commercial, business, tourist or promotional nature.
